In "Morgenthau" greift Anselm Kiefer den gleichnamigen Plan des amerikanischen Finanzministers Henry Morgenthau (1891-1967) auf, der Deutschland nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges in einen vollständig abgerüsteten und entnazifizierten Agrarstaat verwandeln sollte. Kiefer, der in vielen seiner Arbeiten Fragen nach der deutschen Vergangenheit formuliert, visualisiert hier Morgenthaus Zukunftsvorstellung in eine magische Erscheinung der Natur, über deren Farben und Klängen ein mystisches Licht liegt.
