Lot Details
HEIDECK, CARL WILHELM FREIHERR VON1788 Saaralben - 1861 München

Title: The Painter's Self Portrait in front of his Portrait as Bavarian Officer.
Date: ca. 1820.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 92 x 80cm.
Frame: Framed.
Certificate:
Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, 28.07.2013.

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

A very unusual self-portrait of a painter with a very unusual career - the painting shown here is a speciality in terms of both art and military history. After his initial training at the art academy in Zurich, Carl Wilhelm von Heideck transferred to the Munich Military Academy. He made a career in the Bavarian army and went to Greece in 1826, where he was later awarded citizenship for his services. In addition to these successes, he always remained active as a painter; a dual role that he also very skilfully expresses in his self-portrait, in which both the painter in civilian clothes and the officer in uniform are looking at us.
