Lot Details
Oil on paper , laid on zinc sheet. With the modified signature paraph in the lower right. Numbered “232” on the reverse. 33 x 20.5 cm.

• Alongside his genre paintings, Carl Spitzweg was a master of landscape painting, in which he used light and shadow to great effect.
• In this work, Spitzweg captured an 'paysage intime' in the manner of the School of Barbizon.
• Driven by wanderlust and curiosity, the young Spitzweg and his fellow artist Eduard Schleich undertook trips to the countryside around Munich and longer hikes in the picturesque Alpine foothills.
We are grateful to Mr. Detlef Rosenberger, who examined and authenticated the original work, for his kind support in cataloging this lot..
LITERATURE: Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Verzeichnis der Werke. Gemälde und Aquarelle, Stuttgart 2002, no. 62 (illustrated in b/w). - - REFERENCE: Roennefahrt Archive Schweinfurt, addenda to catalogue raisonné, no. 135a.
Julius Bing, Frankfurt am Main. Maria Pauly, Frankfurt am Main (gifted from the above in 1917). Private collection, Frankfurt am Main (acquired from the above in 1964). Private collection, South Germany
In good condition. The zinc plate shows some rubbing due to the framing, which does not extend to the painting itself. With the exception of a few spots, the old varnish was expertly removed or reduced from the detailed and beautifully executed painting. A few old retouched spots are visible in ultravilote light, along with an old, glazed overpainting in the upper right area of the rocks. With very few isolated, expertly retouched spots in the sky and in the lower part of the painting, only visible under UV light. The condition report was compiled in daylight with a UV light source and to the best of our knowledge and belief. [EH]
