Lot Details
François de Troy (French, 1645-1730) and Workshop Allegorical portrait of Apollo and Diana, circa 1720-1740 Oil on canvas 25-1/4 x 32 inches (64.1 x 81.3 cm) We thank Dominique Brême, Directeur du Domaine de Sceaux, Parc et Musée de l'Île-de-France, for his gracious cataloging of this lot. Monsieur Brême believes that the painting is an autograph replica with workshop assistance of a double portrait by François de Troy, now in a private collection; the original is signed and dated 1714. Monsieur Brême suggests that the models for the allegorical figures were Louis-Armand II de Bourbon (1695-1727), Prince of Conti, and his wife, Louise-Elisabeth de Bourbon (1693-1775), Princess of Condé (D. Brême, François de Troy, Paris, 1997, p. 161). HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Lined canvas. Mild frame abrasion at edges. Stretcher bar marks faintly visible near edges under raking light. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout. A vertical line, approximately 2 inches in height, of more pronounced cracking with associated flaking and small losses, in the sky in upper left quadrant. A very few additional scattered small dots of loss. A very few scattered minor surface abrasions, particularly in lower half of work. Mild surface dirt and dust. Not examined out of frame due to size. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly and appears to have been removed in some areas. Brushy retouching at edges appears beneath the varnish layer. Some scattered dots and dashes of more finely applied retouching throughout, primarily affecting Apollo's cheeks, and appearing as strengthening applied to highlights and darkest shadows throughout. Framed Dimensions 34 X 41 X 3.5 Inches
