"When I get ready to paint, I just close my eyes and imagine a scene." —Grandma Moses (as quoted in "Art: Grandma's Imaginings," TIME, September 6, 1948) Painted in 1958, when Grandma Moses was ninety-seven, Ox Cart captures the warmth and imaginative charm of her celebrated winter landscapes. Having turned seriously to painting in her seventies, Moses drew upon decades of rural experience to create gently fantastical views shaped by memory and invention. Her countryside is alive with small stories, inviting the viewer to linger over the rhythms of everyday life. Here, a red covered bridge, snow-laden trees, and the ox cart of the title animate a landscape that feels at once familiar and enchanted. Glitter catches the light across the painted surface, lending the snow a delicate sparkle—a characteristic touch that heightens the scene's storybook appeal. An especially endearing example of Moses's distinctive vision, Ox Cart offers much to delight both seasoned admirers and collectors encountering her work for the first time.
