Lot Details
Etching with plate tone.
Dube R 138. Ebner/Gabelmann 709 R. Signed, dated and titled. One of 10 known copies. On firm grayish paper. 19.7 x 16.7 cm. Sheet: 47,5 x 36,3 cm.
[JS].
- Strong print with striking plate tone in which the ten known copies strongly differ. - Eventful seascape, the choppy sea corresponds to the menacing clouds. - The cross in the background makes this seacape, which was made during the war, an apocalyptic vison. - Made in context of Heckel's famous and today destroyed painting "Madonna von Ostende". - Rare. 4 of 10 known copies are museum-owned: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Staasgalerie Stuttgart, Brücke-Museum, Berlin and Kunsthalle Kiel.
LITERATURE: Hermann Gerlinger, Katja Schneider (eds.), Die Maler der Brücke. Inventory catalog Hermann Gerlinger Collection, Halle (Saale) 2005, p. 209, SHG no. 47.
Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Halle an der Saale (permanent loan from the Hermann Gerlinger Collection, 2001-2017). Buchheim Museum, Bernried (permanent loan from the Hermann Gerlinger Collection, 2017-2022)
Hermann Gerlinger Collection, Würzburg (with the collector's stamp on the reverse, Lugt 6032).
Fine impression. Broad margin unevenly discolored and with faitn stains and rubbed spots. Faint creasing in upper corners and a vertical pressure mark in right edge. Corners with tiny pinholes. [JS]
