Lot Details
Etching with aquatint and drypoint. Signed, titled, and inscribed “Selbstdruck” (self-printed). One of at least 8 copies. On firm, brownish wove paper. 59.4 x 44.7 cm. Sheet: 67,7 x 49,8 cm.
From the series “Hamburger Brücken” (Hamburg Bridges), which was first exhibited at the Commeter Gallery in Hamburg in October 1932. [AW].

• The series “Hamburger Brücken” (Hamburg Bridges) is considered a key work within Nesch's technically innovative graphic art, it was the first time he used his new metal printing technique. - Rare deep black, high-contrast print. - Another copy of this edition is in the collection of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlungen, Basel.
• From 1919, Nesch studied in Dresden under Oskar Kokoschka and visited Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos in 1924, which had a lasting influence on his technique and style.
• In autumn 2025, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart shows the major exhibition “Prägungen und Entfaltungen” (Imprints and Developments), featuring graphic works by, among others, Rolf Nesch.
LITERATURE: Sidsel Helliesen, Bodil Sørensen, Rolf Nesch. The Complete Graphic Works, Milan 2009, catalogue raisonné no. 466.
Private collection, Baden-Württemberg (probably acquired directly from the artist in the 1950s). In family ownership ever since
Good overall impression. A few small tears (approx. 5-15 mm) along the top and bottom edges of the sheet. A small tear (approx. 5 mm) at the top and bottom of the right-hand edge of the sheet. The top and bottom edges of the sheet each have a few horizontal creases and scuffs. Some studio marks along the edges of the printing plate.
