John Dietz (American, 20th Century) The Austin, Texas Navy Flagship (1839-1846) Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches (61.0 x 76.2 cm) Signed lower left: John Dietz PROVENANCE: David Dike Fine Art, Dallas, Texas, October 26, 2024, lot 415, sold as artist Jack Dietz; Private collection, Fort Worth, acquired from the above. The Austin, flagship of the Second Texas Navy from 1839 to 1846, was among the most important military vessels of the Republic of Texas. Named for Stephen F. Austin, the ship symbolized the young nation's determination to defend its independence following the Texas Revolution. Under Commodore Edwin Ward Moore, the Austin participated in naval campaigns in the Gulf of Mexico and played a prominent role in the 1843 Battle of Campeche, one of the few naval engagements in which traditional sailing warships successfully confronted modern steam-powered vessels. More broadly, the Austin represented the Republic's ambition to assert itself as an independent nation before Texas entered the United States in 1845.
