Küstenstück mit mehreren Handels- und Fischerbooten bei aufkommendem Sturm. Das Küstenstück mit Figuren auf einem Holzsteg stehend, dahinter anlandende Fischerboote, ihre Ware löschend. Hinten rechts eine Festungsanlage. Das Gemälde in Komposition typisch für Willaerts und mit – selbst für ihn – vielfältiger, detailliert wiedergegebener Staffage. Die Fische könnten im Atelier von Willem Ormea (um 1610-um 1680) entstanden sein, mit dem Willaerts zusammenarbeitete.

Ein 1620 datiertes Gemälde seiner Hand mit ähnlicher Szene, aber noch flämisch beeinflusster Farbpalette, wurde im Museum Warschau verwahrt und 2024 bei Sotheby's New York zu USD 260.000 verkauft (Lot 324). (1441931) (13)

RETURNING HOME FROM FISHING

According to the tradition of the previous owners, the painting was formerly signed and dated “A. Willaerts 1636”.

The composition is typical of Willaerts and features a particularly diverse and detailed depiction of the staffage, even by his standards. The fish may have been painted in the workshop of Willem Ormea, with whom Willaerts collaborated.

One of his paintings dated 1620 with a similar scene but featuring a Flemish-influenced colour palette, was held at the Warsaw Museum and sold at Sotheby's New York in 2024 for USD 260,000 (lot 324).
