Sanford Robinson Gifford war ein bedeutender Landschaftsmaler der zweiten Generation der Hudson River School. Geboren in Greenfield, New York, wuchs er im Hudson Valley auf, dessen Natur ihn tief prägte. Nach einem abgebrochenen Studium an der Brown University zog er 1844 nach New York City, wo er zunächst Porträtmalerei studierte. Eine Reise 1846 in die Catskills weckte jedoch seine lebenslange Leidenschaft für Landschaften. Er reiste häufig, u.a. durch die USA, Europa und den Nahen Osten, und malte sowohl heimische als auch exotische Landschaften mit großer atmosphärischer Tiefe. Besonders beeinflusste ihn das Werk Turners, das er 1855 in London studierte. Sein berühmtestes Gemälde Lake Nemi entstand während eines Aufenthalts in Rom. Während des Bürgerkriegs diente Gifford in der Nationalgarde und hielt Szenen aus dem Krieg malerisch fest. Trotz persönlicher Tragödien – der Tod zweier Brüder – blieb er künstlerisch aktiv. In späteren Jahren unternahm er Reisen bis in die Rocky Mountains und nach Alaska. Er starb 1880 in New York. Posthum wurde Gifford mit einer großen Retrospektive im Metropolitan Museum geehrt. Seine Werke befinden sich heute in bedeutenden Museen der USA.
