This painting is an original by Jan van Bijlert of the highest quality. It was considered lost until today and reappeared in a private collection in Hesse, where it had been kept for at least three generations. The composition has survived on the basis of a copy that was in the Caretto art dealership in Turin in 1991 (Cf.:
P. Huys Janssen: Jan van Bijlert. 1597/98-1671. Catalogue Raisonné, Amsterdam 1998, p. 182).
