This early career linocut, indicated by the use of Indiana's birth name R. E. Clark for signature, represents a passage from the 1881 Walt Whitman poem, Sea-Drift. The passage begins: "Once Paumanok, When the lilac-scent was in the air and Fifth-month grass was growing, Up this seashore in some briers..." Moderate toning, commensurate with age. Handling dents throughout. There are two, very minor tears along the upper edge of the image and the margin. Moderate foxing throughout. Under UV examination, there appears to be active mold in the margins, does not appear to be affecting central image. Surface residue throughout margins and along sheet edges. Stray mark in lower left margin.
