Kate Eric (20th Century) Beats Baptism Acrylic on canvas 59-1/4 x 79 inches (150.5 x 200.7 cm) Artist monogram lower left PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. Beats Baptism was completed under the project name Kate Eric, a decades long collaboration between artists Kate Tedman and Eric Siemens. The work creates an ethereal, dreamlike experience through the blending of paint applied in thick relief with layers of deep, opaque color. Anthropomorphic creatures float in water, their animal heads rising above the surface while their humanoid bodies drift below in vividly alive depths. The features of these beings are sharply defined by etched lines cut through the paint. Above the surface, the only fully human figure reclines atop a snake, as the other creatures look on. Kate Eric's Beats Baptism draws the viewer in through the strange interplay of these figures, ultimately leaving them to question their own role in the scene—seeing at once what lies above and what moves below.
