Lot Details
Barbara Morgan (American, 1900-1992) Martha Graham- El Penitente- Erick Hawkins, El Flagellant, 1940 Gelatin silver print, printed 1979 13 x 10-1/2 inches (33.0 x 26.7 cm) (image/sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in pencil, mount recto. Signed, titled, dated, and inscribed in ink, and with photographer's stamp, mount verso. PROVENANCE: The artist, Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1988. I photographed Barbara Morgan for LIFE in 1988, and because she had been close friends with Minor White, her door was wide open and very welcoming. After a rather long portrait session I asked about possibly acquiring one of her prints, and picked this one of the great dancer Erik Hawkins, who had been married to Martha Graham, the doyenne of American Modern Dance. Barbara also made some of the seminal images of Martha Graham. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
The artist, Abe Frajndlich, gift from the above.
Overall excellent condition. A very few very minor areas of retouching visible upon close inspection. Sheet is dry mounted to a 20 x 16 inch mat board, not framed.
