Lot Details
Jonathan Becker (American, b. 1954) Robert Mapplethorpe at the Whitney, 1988 Gelatin silver print 9-7/8 x 9-7/8 inches (25.1 x 25.1 cm) (image) 14 x 11 inches (sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in ink, lower margin recto. Inscribed in ink, and with photographer's stamp, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, 1989. Jonathan Becker had been commissioned by Vanity Fair to photograph Mapplethorpe at the Whitney opening. Jonathan and I must have met somewhere around that time, and I told him how much I admired this image. He generously offered to trade it for one of mine, as he had by then seen my portraits of famous artists in various magazines, but I no longer remember which photo of mine we traded.
