Arthur Rackham (British, 1867-1939) The Black Brothers, The King of the Golden River book interior, 1932 Ink and watercolor on paper laid on board 7-1/4 x 10 inches (18.4 x 25.4 cm) (sheet) Signed lower right: ARackham The present work is published as an interior for The King of the Golden River; or The Black Brothers, a Legend of Stiria by John Ruskin (Harrap, 1932) and illustrates the story's concluding lines: "And at the top of the cataract of the Golden River are still to be seen two black stones, round which the waters howl mournfully every day at sunset; and these stones are still called by the people of the valley: The Black Brothers." Rackham reworked this illustration after its publication: adding color and a new background of anthropomorphic trees.
