Alex Katz (b. 1927) Study for Anika and for Trio, 2008 Oil on board 12 x 16 inches (30.5 x 40.6 cm) Incised with signature and dated in center: Alex Katz / 08 PROVENANCE: Lillian Heidenberg Fine Art, Brooklyn, New York; Private collection, Quebec, Canada, acquired from above. Alex Katz's Study for Anika and for Trio (2008) demonstrates his ability to establish a likeness through color and a few precisely placed marks. Working within the longstanding tradition of portraiture, Katz gives the familiar head-and-shoulders format a modern directness through close cropping and simplified forms. His distinctive treatment of the human figure has established him as one of the most important painters working today. Yellow and ochre shape the face against a pale blue-green ground, while fine lines define the eyes and mouth. Visible strokes across the face and hair reveal his handling of paint, balancing a recognizable likeness with the freedom of the brushwork.
