Giovanni Boldini (Italian, 1842-1931) James Abbott McNeill Whistler Graphite on paper 5-3/8 x 4-1/2 inches (13.7 x 11.4 cm) Signed lower left: Boldini Property from the Dr. Sheldon G. and Irma H. Gilgore Collection of Italian Art 1850-1925 PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, London, June 23, 1983, lot 541; Acquired from the above. The renowned painter Giovanni Boldini was an equally exceptional draftsman, employing a precise yet expressive line to capture his subject. The present pencil drawing is a study for Boldini's celebrated portrait of his friend and fellow artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, painted in 1897 (Brooklyn Museum, New York). With swift, calligraphic strokes, Boldini renders Whistler's distinctive wavy curls, his Van Dyck beard covering the hint of a smile, and iconic monocle, here held firmly in his squinting eye, while his chin rests on his left hand. This pose is altered in the oil, illustrating Boldini's tireless effort to capture the personality of his sitter. Both works are unified by Whistler's engaging presence, creating a sense of immediacy, as the artist studies the viewer just as the viewer studies him. Francesca Dini has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work. The lot is accompanied by her expertise letter.
