Maurice Sendak (American, 1928-2012) Mickey and Wild Thing Drum with Mickey Figurines Ink and watercolor on drum 11 x 11 x 4-3/4 inches (27.9 x 27.9 x 12.1 cm) (drum, overall) Signed lower right: Maurice Sendak 50 Years of Sendak: The Museum Tour Collection Maurice Sendak and Mickey Mouse entered this world in the same year and Sendak remained a devoted fan of Mickey and Walt Disney throughout his life. Presented here are three vintage Disney toys from his personal collection. First is a tin litho Mickey Mouse Band drum manufactured by Noble & Coule in the early 1930's. The sides feature brightly colored images of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Clarabelle and Horace Horsecollar. Featured on the drum head is an original rendering of Mickey Mouse alongside Sendak's monster, Carol from Where the Wild Things Are. This one-of-a-kind treasure is signed by the artist below the watercolor and ink image. With the drum are two Mickey mouse toys of the same era, one a "Rambling Mickey Mouse" celluloid wind-up toy manufactured by Borgfeldt, and the other a black and white jointed wooden figure possibly produced in Italy by Peri. Each piece in the trio is a rare Disney collectible unto itself, but their direct association to one of the great children's book authors (and Disney super-fan) of the 20th century makes them immeasurably unique and desirable to both Sendak and Disney collectors.
